Remedial Department

The Remedial Department serves the school by meeting the additional challenging needs of pupils through the provision of extra attention to perfecting reading, writing skills and expanding on mathematical abilities.Jesus Christ is our role model and communicator who always met the specific needs of his audience in order to maximise the God given potential of individuals.  In collaboration, the Vana Vashe Section serves the diverse special challenges of more physically/mentally-challenged pupils to integrate into the mainstream.

Our purpose as a department is to:

  • Serve as a resource and safety valve for  pupils with learning difficulties.
  • identify and  intervene early  in critical  remedial situations (catch  them early)
  • Assist students who are having problems in areas such as Mathematics, English and allowing them to work at a more appropriate level.
  • Provide a positive environment for students suffering from low self -esteem—they  can  ask as  many questions as they can  in a small setting
  • Encourage better study and learning  habits
  • Early morning  readers (those reading below their chronological age)
  • Comprehension sessions- usually targeted for grade 3 & 4 (once/week)
  • Maths lessons for smaller groups (daily for 1hr)
  • Spelling programmes  for all Grade 2—7 (grades 4-7 target group is the support stream)
  • Tuition classes full time (small classes of less than 15 pupils).Selection is dependant upon the weakest group.
  • The above classes mainstream for Shona, Computer, P.E, Life skills and Music.
  • Keep your eyes open at all times: be observant of any changes and don’t allow problems with your child to grow
  • Develop a working relationship with your  teachers: working in collaboration with teachers
  • Work on social skills: school is not only about getting ‘A’s-it’s also about developing friendships
  • Help children become independent: e.g. dress themselves
  • Communicate with each child daily: speak with the tone and with the words that you wish s/he would use with others
  • Early identification through tests to verify and diagnose the problem
  • Various methods and aids  are used
  • Individualised Education Programme where necessary is used
  • Careful monitoring of behaviour  and progress is done
  • Feedback to other departments and parents about the pupil is done
  • Collaboration of teachers is key in teaching(adapting curriculum  materials and  techniques)

In Vana Vashe centre, our aim is to attend to individual needs of the children by facilitating their intellectual development (through reading, counting and other activities that enhance concentration and focus), physical development (through P. E. and Gym) and emotional and social development (through outings and encouraging an increase in their social circle).  Free play is also crucial because it encourages creativity and team building.

Grade 2 Purple RemedialDeriving our strength and purpose for life from God, we acknowledge the verse Ps.139:13-14 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”  We are a class that exists to cater for all our individual learning differences. We recognise that each one of us is special and has a role to play in the school, in the family,  in society and in advancing the Kingdom of God as the Creator of everything and Sustainer of life.

John 21:16 “Take care of my sheep” Loving Jesus means more than just saying words, when you love Him, you serve Him, and that means taking action to help others. Jesus wants His followers to show His love to others by the way they live their lives. This will help to instil a sense of peace and security in the school and in society in general. With such a positive learning environment, children will concentrate and understand what they are taught more and there will be greater impact of education.

Team BlueIn 3 Blue individual differences are taken seriously. I thrive on differentiation and variety in teaching the children with different learning needs.  I understand that children may have different abilities and styles of learning. Some are better in visual learning while others are more competent in audio learning. Certain pupils have to learn through sense of touch or practical experiences. Therefore, I design diversified teaching activities and adopt various teaching methods to help students develop their potential and remove the obstacles in learning. I adapt the curriculum to accommodate the learning characteristics and abilities of pupils. Objectives are set with the children in mind and are easy to achieve to ensure that pupils may acquire the knowledge as desired after the completion of a topic or concept.

Reach for the StarsThe culture in the class is where the children are expected to have a go and do their best without necessarily competing against one another. The small size allows for individual attention to each child’s unique needs. We have a more practical and hands on approach when teaching concepts allowing the children to learn through experience. There is more group activity and co-learning. The use of diverse teaching strategies, including multimedia, allows for the children to be exposed to concepts in a variety of ways which caters to their different learning styles.

Remedial Department GatewayEvery morning the Grade 5s1 class read aloud to their teacher:
